Moodle FAQ – 3.9/4.1 transition

Moodle transition

How can I duplicate content in section description from one unit to another?

This content will need to be copy/pasted into an appropriate place, either in the overview section or a text and media area (label) within the learning journey.

What do I do if I find content from another unit in my unit?

Please open the text box, remove the content and save again. This arose from development on the Mass Actions tool and is a noted bug with eSolutions.

Do I have to do anything differently for grading in Moodle 4.1?

No. Marking, marking workflows, and results management processes are unchanged.

What will I have to do differently in Moodle during the teaching period?

The new template should not affect how your unit runs. The new layout gives new ways to quickly surface relevant information, but the underlying unit structure is unchanged.

What if I can't see my unit?

Faculty administrators may be still working to migrate all units and prepare these for you. View a list of faculty contacts here

Where can I point students for information?

You can point your students to the Learn HQ webpage communicating the changes, or to your usual Faculty student support point.

How do students know about this change/which Moodle to go to?

Right now, students are given links to both the old and new Moodle instances within my.monash. When they are on either Moodle site, they are shown a block advising them how to switch between them, along with a link to the Learn HQ webpage communicating the changes.

What is different about the site-level dashboard?

The Dashboard has been rearranged to surface more relevant information for students. The Timeline is now at the top, followed by Unit tiles and then the Calendar.
Note that you can rearrange your own dashboard by moving these blocks up and down, or even moving them into the Blocks drawer if you wish. This will not affect anyone else's dashboard, and can be returned to the default at any time.

How do I access the new Moodle 4.1?

All staff who previously had access to Moodle now have access to Moodle 4.1.

Students and staff can access Moodle via My.Monash/Student app/Student portal or directly via http://learning.monash.edu. Note: any previously bookmarked links to Moodle will need to be updated.

When does teaching start in the new Moodle 4.1?

Teaching commences on Moodle 4.1 with units offered from 1 November 2023 including November intake, Summer A and Trimester C teaching periods. Unless you are teaching in the above teaching periods, you will begin teaching in the new environment in 2024.

As an educator, what do I need to do to prepare my units for teaching?

Once your unit has been migrated to Moodle 4.1, please review the Monash Standard Template Educator checklist

Where have all the menus moved to?

In Moodle 3.9, most functions in your unit were accessed from the Edit cog at the top right. In Moodle 4.1, these features have moved to a menu at the top of the page. All of the functions you used to access in the cog or the Navigation drawer have moved here.

Some of my H5P content did not migrate correctly - what happened?

This seems to be connected to the permissions with H5P itself. We are working to make it simpler to download H5P content from Moodle 3.9 so you can re-upload it in Moodle 4.1. Please check all H5P content in your unit.

Is there an example Moodle unit site I can look at?

The Education Design and Development team have built a template Moodle 4.1 unit, which you can view here. Please note that some design elements in the template unit are not ‘out of the box’ Moodle features such as the ‘Learn how’ tabs.

How will students know which units are in Moodle 3.9 and which are in 4.1?

Students will continue to access Moodle via my.monash/student app/student portal.
Once in Moodle, they will see their enrolled list of units. This will also include a link to the 3.9/4.1 version of Moodle for units that do not appear in their list.

Students who bookmarked the direct link may need to update it to https://learning.monash.edu/

What is happening to Moodle 3.9?

Moodle 3.9 will remain active for units that commenced before November (except Monash Online). We anticipate the teaching out window will be complete by mid 2024 after which the site will remain available in read-only mode.

When will a new MEA module be available for Moodle 4.1?

The Moodle 4.1 Essentials module is now available here. Completion of the module is recorded in your HR myDevelopment profile for this year.

You can also view the Educator Checklist for a guided step-by-step to setting up your site.

I have edit set on, but I can’t move content or see the navigation bar

This is a rare error that occurred during initial migration. Please log a Servicedesk ticket, and also reach out to your Faculty Admin for help in rectifying this, as your unit will need to be re-migrated.
